December 27, 2010

Hello all, here are today's songs.

Artist: The Streets
Song Title: Turn The Page
Genre: Hip Hop
Description: The Streets, Mike Skinner, has always had a very unique style in his rapping. This is generally what draws people towards his music. The beats that he generally uses are very unorthodox in their nature and his rapping can sometimes be conceived as simply speaking over the track, but that is exactly where his charm is. The key to listening to a track by Mike Skinner is to focus more on his lyrics than the beat. You can tell because similarly to MF Doom and more lyrical MC's, there is no hook or chorus. It is simply lyrics and a beat. Painfully simple, but complex all the same.

Artist: Phantogram
Song Title: Mouthful of Diamonds
Genre: Electronic/Alternative
Description: Phantogram as a duo is perfect. The two come together to make a great combination of soulful voice and great beats. As one can notice the drum beat is somewhat hip hop-ish while the guitar and the synths are the furthest thing possible from hip hop. And then there is the voice. As I said about Moocha's voice in my first post, her voice is haunting. It really stays with you and you just want to hear more. At least that's how I feel.

Artist: Slum Village
Song Title: Players
Genre: Hip Hop
Description: How can you go wrong when you have production genius J Dilla on the beat and lyrical wordsmiths like Baatin, T3 and Elzhi on the track? Answer: You can't. This beat is definitely some of J Dilla's finest work, but then again that can be said about a variety of his tracks. Personally I think that this track works because of the smooth beat along with the 'smooth like butter' flow that accompanies it. Slum Village was definitely some of old school hip hop's finest. Rest in Peace J Dilla and Baatin, you are missed.

Artist: Just Jack
Song Title: Embers (30cm Remix)
Genre: Alternative
Description: Just Jack made a great song in Embers, and somehow 30cm has made it better in my opinion. Although I really enjoy the original, it felt like something was missing and whatever it was 30cm has been able to fill that void and as the video says 'fulfill the potential' of the song. I had my doubts at first, but as soon as the song starts and there is a beat to go with the strings all my doubts were put to rest. This is a great song.

Hope you enjoyed today's post. Check back tomorrow!

Peace.
